Everything you need to know about beta thelassemia

Welcome to Jacob Avraham's site devoted to Beta Thalassemia. After exploring this site you will understand more about one of the most devistating blood disorders which, in make cases, can be devistating or even lethal. Beta Thelassemia is a disorder which causes decreased production of adult hemoglobin, a protein needed in the transport of oxygen in the bloodstream. One part of the hemoglobin, called the 'globin' section, consists of 2 identical polypettide chains. Two of these chain are known as the beta chains and they are responsible for hemoglobin production in Red Blood cells. People who suffer from Beta Thalassemia are unable to produce sufficient amounts of hemoglobin, causing a wide range of problems. This site is devoted to helping people understand the effects of this life-threatening desease and how each one of us can get involved to help in the fight against this devastating illness.
